Mapex Black Panther Design Lab ‘Versatus’ Features: MAPLE/MAHOGANY HYBRID SHELL: The Maple/Mahogany hybrid shell offers a perfect blend of warmth and brightness, delivering rich tones with a dynamic response that elevates any performance. SONIClear™ BEARING EDGE: SONIClear™ Bearing Edge is standard on all BPDL shells, allowing the drumhead to sit flatter on the shell, making better contact. MASTER TUNE LUG: The Master Tune Lug utilizes a small body for the least amount of metal-to-wood contact. A Design Lab-exclusive pressured locking mechanism is outfitted on every lug to keep the drum in tune, show after show. SONIC PEDESTAL FOOT: The steel leg is prevented from contacting the ground by an internal cotter pin, allowing the floor tom to “float” on the elevated “spring” of the rubber foot, eliminating vibration transfer and maximizing resonance. CHAMBER SPECIFIC DESIGN: As the drums get larger in diameter,plies get progressively thicker, depths graduate by 1/2”, bearing edges change and the SAS ring system changes. AIR FLOW VENTING: Air flow vents are placed at the *Nodal line with the lugs, so as not to affect the resonance of the shells. Through painstaking testing, each Chamber Specific approach has lead to a formula of multiple vent holes in BPDL series. Tom and bass drums have different combinations of vent holes. SAS STATIC 90° FLOOR TOM LEG: The straighter the path to the floor, the more sound loss: the SAS Static 90˚ Floor Tom Leg resolves this issue, allowing the most possible resonance from the floor toms. HALO MOUNTING SYSTEM: Using a lateral, unique “under lug-line” suspension system, this groundbreaking isolation mount allows the shell the freedom to have an open, pure tone. HALO MOUNTING SYSTEM – SUSTAIN ADJUSTMENT KNOB: With the rubber gasket inside the mount, you can screw the knob down fully to dampen the shell resonance for a shorter decay, or back it off for a wide, open tone. In the studio, this allows you to “pre-EQ” your drums before feeding them into your plug-ins. SAS ATTENUATING FLOOR TOM LEG: This BREAKTHROUGH eliminates the need for external muffling of your floor toms. Given that a straighter path to the ground through the floor tom legs results in greater loss of sound, the ability to alter their shape allows you to control the resonance. With options for every angle, even beyond 90˚ to a radical inverted position, the SAS attenuating floor tom leg™ makes unlimited real-time attenuation of your drums possible. SAS RING SYSTEM: The Mapex Black Panther Design Lab uses a revolutionary process involving reinforcement rings. Mapex focuses on how the use of rings and their unique placement can affect the sonic character of the instrument. The bearing edge shape cuts were made through the reinforcement rings, as well as the drum shell’s wall so that the reinforcement rings became an element of the overall bearing edge shape. This additional thickness at the edges of the drum would also add some low-end and projection to the drums’ sound. These “Sonic” rings are distributed in varying degrees throughout the system.
